Open Question: What car do you think would be best for an independent college student?

I'm currently a Junior college student. My college is in a college town so this place is "dead" during breaks. I have never had a car while living on my own, and it's been almost a year. Before that, I went to a college near my parent's house so I really didn't need a car. I say I'm independent because all my tuition, rent, utilities, and other expenses gets paid by with grants, scholarships, and a student loan (It's a back-up, I don't use that money), and I currently have a work study job which is about 10 hours a week. I'm really considering getting a car now because I know I'm going to need it in less than 2 years from now (graduate school), it's a lot better when buying groceries (it's a pain doing it by bus), and I'd also like to leave this town in breaks and do road trips. So far, I didn't think much about this because I can manage without a car but since I've got a job I could afford buying a car with monthly payments. I know a used car would be better for me but I don't want to deal with the hassle if it has a damage or it needs a major maintenance fix. So it's a car I don't want to have to worry about for the next five years at least.
