Open Question: What's a good first car?

I'm 18 and about to start my freshman year in college. I'm going to be buying my first car very soon and I want something that's reliable, good on gas, easy to fix if a problem ever arises, and attractive. I'll be paying for the car myself and my maximum price is $10,000. I've looked at Pontiac G6s, Chevy Cobalts, Mazda Mazda3s, Honda Civics, and numerous other kinds of cars. I'm just not sure what to get due to the fact that I don't know much about the way these different cars feel or how they run.
